If you are like me, you were first introduced to Nordic crime fiction by Stieg Larsson's trilogy. Their tremendous success whetted our appetite for dark, well-crafted thrillers. Jo Nesbo fills that need brilliantly, more so in fact than Larsson, as Nesbo is a natural novelist and storyteller whereas Larsson was a journalist.
The Bat is actually the first in the Harry Hole (pronounced Hoo-leh) series, just now being released for the first time in North America.
If you know me, you know that Jo Nesbo is my absolute favourite novelist and I have been sooo excited for this release. In The Bat we see Harry damaged, yes, but a little less so than in the later books. A little more naive, a little simpler, a Nordic detective dispatched to Australia to help investigate what happened to a young Norwegian woman. We see Australia through his eyes, a very different world than Norway, as he becomes immersed in the trail of death that becomes more personal and personally dangerous as the book goes on.
A must read for any Jo Nesbo fan, or fan of Nordic Crime Thrillers in general. If you are not a fan yet - you will be soon!
