Wow. This most recent installment of the John Cardinal mystery series blew me away. This is Giles Blunt doing for Canada what Jo Nesbo did for Norway. He has created a dark and convoluted mystery novel that spans Canada from the far north to the near north to Toronto. Most of us only see part of this vast country, generally the warmer part, and when we think of its vastness we most likely think of east to west. Blunt has us thinking north and south and everything Canadian in between.
A woman is found frozen to death, mysteriously garbed in new outdoor clothing and chained in place. A Thermos is near her, giving her the slightest chance of survival, or to prolong her ordeal.
Until the Night weaves a couple of intense mysteries together while exploring the delicate nature of John Cardinal and Lise Delorme's relationship, all against the most Canadian of backdrops. A Canada that most of us haven't seen before.
This is Blunt's best novel yet, I simply could not put it down. It is haunting and riveting and brilliant.
